The good news is that despite these differences with some determination and patience breastfeeding is still an option most of the time!
Inverted Nipples
Q: Can I breastfeed with an inverted nipple?
Short Answer : YES! Did you know pumping for a few minutes before a breastfeeding session can help prepare your breast for a feeding? It also helps to elicit your milk ejection reflexes and encourage an erect your nipple which is ideal for latching. Before bringing infant(s) to the breast we need a nice erect nipple, so they have a chance at a deeper latch. With an inverted nipple this is extra important and using a pump can help in some cases.
Hand expressing can also be a great way to stimulate your nipple. Simple nipple rolling or expressing a few drops of milk can help the nipple evert. There are a few nipple everters on the market but these can sometimes cause damage so if you choose to use one, please take it slow.
Q: Can I breastfeed with a flattened nipple?
Short Answer: YES! Pumping and hand expressing can also help with flattened nipples. However, knowing the root cause of your flat nipple is very important also. Sometimes if we are staying engorged for long periods of time our nipple can appear flat especially if the engorgement is severe. It’s important to address the engorgement first, which should bring your natural nipple back into sight. If you naturally have a flat nipple working with a Lactation Consultant can be helpful. There are a few things to try like different hand positions for latching and also tools like a SNS and a nipple shield that might be helpful!
