Paced Bottle Feeding

How to Pace Feed:

  • Infant should be sitting in a more upright position

  • Make sure you’re using an appropriate flow nipple (i.e. slow flow or “0” for newborn)

  • As with breastfeeding, align infant’s nose to bottle’s nipple and wait for the wide open mouth, bringing infant on deeply with nice flanged lips.

  • Be sure to hold the bottle parallel to the ground

  • The nipple should be half full of air, half full of milk

As Seen on TV/ Not paced:

  • Great feeding method for older babies who are on cow’s milk

  • Feeding a bottle like allows caregiver to pace the feeds which can cause overfeeding, increased gas and spit up.

  • Routine overfeeding can cause an array of issues

  • It will be hard for Mother to pump enough milk to every feeding if infant is receiving over the appropriate daily amounts. If Mother can not keep up, we’ll see routine formula supplementation which can be risky and expensive. Think of it like this- feeding our babes a Thanksgiving meal at every meal. Yikes!
